For decades, its ads said it was at "the edge of Waikiki." On Wednesday, demolition crews started breaking down The Wave Waikiki nightclub.

The Wave closed in May after a 26-year run. Mike G., a former radio DJ and frequent visitor to the Wave, was among those watching the demolition.

"You see in the paper that it's closing down. I went to the last party. And now, you know, watching it being torn down, that you realize that it's over. It's done. The wave is no more, no longer at the edge of Waikiki," Mike G. said.

The Wave and a nearby apartment building are being demolished to make way for a new, 35-story luxury condominium. The Chicago-based real estate developer said construction should begin early next year.
