Demolition work is under way at a former electrical components factory in Bloomington, IN. It is part of an effort to clean up cancer-causing chemicals at the site.
Piles of scrap and debris remain from the 474,000 square foot building on the city's west side that was operated for years by Westinghouse. It's now owned by ABB Incorporated.
The demolition includes a voluntary cleanup of parts of the property that are contaminated with asbestos and polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs. It is on schedule to be finished by the end of the year.
Westinghouse used PCBs in the manufacture of electrical capacitors at the plant until the 1970s. The factory closed in 2000.
