The second round of flood-damaged houses in Conklin, NY could be knocked down in September as part of a federal buyout program.
Twenty-one houses damaged in last June's flooding are on the list of houses scheduled for demolition. On Tuesday night, Conklin Town Board members voted to seek bids from contractors willing to do demolition work. Bids are due by July 9. Work should start sometime in September, Conklin Supervisor Debra Preston said.
The 21 houses are among 72 houses damaged in last year's floods that will be demolished as part of the federal buyout program. Houses are being demolished in groups of approximately 20, Preston said.
Conklin is still working on dismantling another dozen houses damaged in the April 2005 flood. That round of demolitions began earlier this month. Ten of 12 houses are already down, Preston said.
"It's very sad," Preston said of the demolition work. Most people who lived in the houses have already moved out of town and won't be back, she said.
