There are more changes coming to the Jacksonville International Airport (JIA). Crews started tearing down a concourse that has serviced passengers for the past 40 years. Demolition began on Monday morning on Concourse A.
It is part of a major expansion at the airport. Construction managers expect the demolition to be finished in 3 weeks. When the site has been cleaned up, work will begin on the ramp so the west side of the new Concourse A can open for aircraft operations. This is set for November.
Concourse A west opened to passengers recently. A spokesperson for the Jacksonville Aviation Authority told First Coast News, "It is really looking like a big city airport right now."
There will be other additions at JIA soon like the opening of Concourse C, a new food court and more retail stores. Some feel the changes will make the airport user friendly.
Thousands use the airport daily. More than six million people fly in and out of JIA every year.
