The demolition of a Clarksville, TN eyesore was supposed to be all good news, but now, the city could be in big trouble for the way it knocked down the Ratchford Apartments last year.
The state department of Environment and Conservation ordered Clarksville to pay a $77,000 fine. The hefty fine is for procedural violations and for improperly dealing with materials that contain asbestos.
The Ratchford Apartments had long been a problem in Clarksville. It was a regular stop for police, who responded to dozens of crimes there. It had also become a haven for vagrants in its final months.
However, TDEC said the city violated air pollution regulations by not removing asbestos materials before knocking the buildings down. Clarksville officials also did not properly notify TDEC of the demolition.
