Demolition began Monday on the abandoned military bunker south of Highway 58 in Mojave, CA where two High Desert teens were killed execution-style in January.
An excavator and frontloader tore into the soil surrounding the concrete structure that once served as a radio relay station for the U.S. Air Force. By midafternoon, much of the soil at the southwestern end of the bunker had been scooped away, exposing the concrete walls underneath.
By the end of May, nothing should be left, said Brian Sytsma, spokesman for the U.S. Air Force's Real Property Agency.
It brings to an end a military relic and favorite spot for High Desert youths who often congregated there to party, camp out, stargaze and shoot guns.
For Leah Sherzer, the bunker's destruction will not erase the horrific memory of what happened to her daughter and her daughter's boyfriend there in the early morning hours of Jan. 5.
Sherzer's 16-year-old daughter, Bodhisattva "Bodhi" Sherzer-Potter, and 18-year-old Christopher Cody Thompson, of Apple Valley, were marched into the bunker and shot to death during what authorities say was a robbery attempt. Arrested in connection with their deaths are Collin Lee McGlaughlin, 18, of West Covina, David Smith, 19, of Covina, and Cameron Thomson, 16, also of Covina. Thomson is being tried as an adult.
"It's sad it took the death of two children to have them take care of something they should have taken care of years ago," Sherzer said .
