A 22-story building under demolition unexpectedly collapsed in Bangladesh's capital, killing three people and injuring dozens of others, a rescue official said Sunday.
Some of the building's floors suddenly caved in late Saturday, raining large chunks of concrete and glass shards down on workers who were demolishing the structure, said Selim Newaz Bhuiyan, a fire brigade official.
Several workers were hit by debris, while others were hurt trying to jump to safety out of lower floors.
Rescuers pulled out at least 20 injured workers from the rubble and recovered three bodies. Authorities were investigating the cause of the collapse.
Witnesses said the building's 14th floor suddenly crashed onto the floor below as workers cut through concrete. Several other floors then collapsed atop each other.
Injuries and deaths at construction sites are common in Bangladesh, as many builders fail to provide safety equipment and scaffolding consists of bamboo and rope.
Another worker was killed at the demolition site a few months ago after falling from a top floor, Bhuiyan said.
