The Bayonne Local Redevelopment Authority will receive bids Jan. 18 to tear down seven buildings at the Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor to help clear part of the Maritime District for an auto marine terminal.
Interim BLRA Executive Director Joseph Nichols said that the terminal owner/operator, PortsAmerica - which agreed to pay $90 million for the property - will be demolishing two additional buildings, including a municipal firehouse, on the 90-acre parcel. The firehouse will be moved elsewhere on the Peninsula.
Nichols said that the BLRA is paying to take down the seven buildings because they straddle the Maritime District and neighboring districts.
Nichols said that PortsAmerica has asked the BLRA to evict the city firefighters occupying Building 44B and tenants in Building 74 by Jan. 31. He said that the fire department is considering relocating either to an area inside the Peninsula front gate or across from Building 51, while several Homeland Security vehicles and private ship parts owned by a private tenant now in Building 74 would move, eventually, to Building 12. Bids will be received at 11 a.m. at City Hall, 630 Avenue C.
