A Downtown Bayonne, NJ chemical plant which had a fire on its property this week is in trouble with the city - but only indirectly because of the fire.

City Construction Code Official Michael Feuer said that CasChem, a division of Rutherford Chemicals, had no permit to demolish an empty warehouse extending onto the edge of its Newark Bay pier at the foot of Avenue A.

It was the warehouse where, according to the city Fire Department, a one-alarm fire started at around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, spreading to the underside of the pier, causing a section of the pier to collapse into the bay. Fireboats doused the flames in about an hour.

No injuries were reported.

Fire Department records showed that CasChem had a "burn permit" allowing the use of acetylene torches, but not a demolition permit.
