Arkansas State University has scheduled the 15-second implosion of its nine-story Twin Towers dormitory for May 25th. The dorm is no longer used as a residence hall and was replaced by a new one, the NorthPark Quads.
Preparatory work for the implosion began March 31st. Lead paint, asbestos and a dangerous material used in light ballasts have been removed. Access to the site on the day of the implosion will be controlled by campus police. City firefighters will be on hand if needed.
Some nearby buildings will be evacuated as a safety precaution.
Twin Towers was built in the heart of the ASU campus and opened in 1968 as a men's dormitory with 1,100 beds. In recent years, city and campus police and local firefighters have used the building as a training site. Chandler Demolition of Memphis will do the work, as well as haul away the debris.
The cost of the project is about $1 million.
