A man convicted of eight felonies and two misdemeanors in relation to a demolition project from 2007 was sentenced. Thomas K. Tienda will serve a four-year community corrections term and pay more than $300,000 in restitution.
The State Attorney General says Tienda hired the homeless individuals and handymen instead of licensed contractors to save money. Their work, done without a permit, resulted in the release of the asbestos.
Tienda was also suspected of reusing some of the contaminated materials and lying to health inspectors about how he disposed of the materials.
Tienda was convicted of the crimes last October by a jury in October.
