The former empire detriot steel mill site in new boston, ohio contained a buried
chunk of iron weighing 1700 tons. The mill was the largest in the united states in the 1940s. It was shut down in 1980 and its integrated coke plant shut down in 2002.
Chip off the old block: In New Boston, Ohio, a worker from North Atlantic Dismantling cuts through a chunk of iron and slag weighing 3.4 million pounds. Spillage from 60 years of iron pours at the former Empire Detroit Steel mill created the lumpy mass, which will be sold for scrap.
