I think they have their place. I think they work well on large projects where labor harmony is critical. I've been seeing them increasingly on smaller projects where I don't think they fit. They increase the overall cost of projects and they are protective of the home town contractors. Protection of the local contractor's isn't neccessarily a bad thing. In my experience Union projects are much more safer than non union projects
