BENTON (WSIL) — Franklin County is one step closer to having a new courthouse.

Crews began demolition on the old courthouse Monday morning, reducing the building to rubble in just a couple hours.

County leaders previously told News 3 that, once demolition began, it was expected to take about eight days to remove the entire building.

Construction of the new three-story, 46,000 square foot Franklin County Courthouse is expected to take about 14 months and be completed in late December 2021.

The county is posting updates on the courthouse project on its website. Plans for each floor and a rendering of the new courthouse can also be found there.
